“The Resonance of Seclusion”
The Lowry, Salford, 28th February 2013 (then touring)
Written and directed by Liz Postlethwaite
In the year 2000 artist Joash Woodrow left his home in Leeds for the final time to move to a new life in Manchester. Having lived as a recluse for almost 40 years few people could believe what was discovered when the contents of the house were finally revealed. Despite his apparent seclusion Joash had painted and drawn throughout his life, filling the rooms of the normal suburban semi with over 700 paintings, 3000 drawings and hundreds and hundred of books.
Join Small Things to discover an extraordinary story inspired by one man’s unstoppable drive to create and the equally unstoppable support of his family that made his artistic life a reality.
A story of amazing discoveries, journeys that last over the years and brothers quietly growing old together.
The performances at The Lowry and Etz Chaim Synagogue will be supported by an exclusive selection of Joash Woodrow’s work.
About the Tour
Small Things are delighted to be touring this show:
“We are especially excited about staging the work in Salford and Leeds as the performance will be supported by an exclusive selection of Joash’s work,” explained Liz Postlethwaite, Creative Director. “And performing alongside these pieces is a real privilege as Joash’s story truly comes to life when you experience his art.”
About the Company
Small Things is a social enterprise using creativity and creative engagement to fuel learning and change.
They do this by making creative interventions, inventive and beautifully crafted performances, and playful experiences that provide inspiration, and make space for development. These interactions and projects take inspiration from stories and situations that reflect the world around us, and that help us understand our own place within it.
Their work is linked to local communities and identities, and created and shared in all manner of spaces and places. Everything they do is inspired by an interest in the power of art, culture and creativity and the part that this can play within wider social change.
