SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR
By Luigi Pirandello
A new English version by Anthony Khaseria and Manuela Ruggiero
Directed by Manuela Ruggiero
For Shakespeare revealed: International Month
Press Night Friday 5th April at 7.30pm
"Well, can you believe this? Someone who is trying to pass himself off as a Character comes and asks me who I am!" - The Director – from Six Characters in Search of an Author
“We are lost”, says one of the Six Characters, interrupting a theatre company in the middle of a rehearsal. Lost, abandoned by their author, The Characters are condemned to an eternal limbo, to the constant struggle of seeking to come to life on stage. What characters would Pirandello leave wandering fatherless? A Sicilian family and their relationships watched through a magnifying glass which reveals hidden fears, needs and brutal instincts.
In the evocative setting at The Rose, the audience will be brought into an extraordinary dimension where The Actors’ and The Characters’ truths collide.
But who is actually “real”?
Italian director, Manuela Ruggiero, powerfully conveys Pirandello’s passion and torments in a surprising new adaptation, explored and enhanced through the use of physical theatre.
Manuela Ruggiero, Theatre, Director Actor and Choreographer was recently Italian Consultant on the play Filumena (Almeida) directed by M. Attenborough. She directed the play Words of Honour- the Mafia Exposed that after London (Jermyn Street Theatre), Edinburgh (Assembly Halls) and Rome (Piccolo teatro Eliseo) is currently on in Paris at Teatre Les Dechargeur until 23rd March.
“A creative and invigorating piece ... it stands out from previous adaptations of this play in London”
Enza De Francisci (University College, London. Pirandello Studies, vol. 33 (2013))
The Rose is an indoor archaeological site. It is advisable to dress with an extra layer as there is no heating. There are also no toilets so please use Shakespeare’s Globe, just a few hundred meters away.
