1st Night Photos: Felicity Jones is Donmar's Luise

Date: 14 June 2011

Michael Grandage’s production of Luise Miller opened at the Donmar Warehouse last night (13 June 2011, previews from 8 June), bringing Friedrich Schiller’s 1783 play to the London stage in a new version by Mike Poulton. The play runs at the Donmar until 30 July.

The cast includes Felicity Jones, Alex Kingston, Max Bennett, Ben Daniels, David Dawson, John Light, Finty Williams, Paul Higgins, Alexander Pritchett and Lloyd Everitt.

In an after-party held at the Donmar Warehouse, the cast were joined to celebrate their opening night by guests including Judi Dench, Michael Hadley, Amelia Bullmore, Frankie Bridges, Ron Cook and Pippa Bennett-Warner.

Luise Miller tells of the love between Ferdinand, a nobleman’s son, and Luise Miller, daughter of a middle-class musician. What begins as a hopeful romance quickly descends into tragedy as the intrigue of the community threatens to destroy their love.

The play is the penultimate production of artistic director Michael Grandage's tenure at the Donmar and follows his productions of Schiller's Don Carlos and Mary Stuart. He announced this past October that he would leave the Covent Garden-based theatre to pursue freelance directing opportunities.

After nine years as artistic director, Grandage will depart following the opening of his final production, Shakespeare’s Richard II in December. He will be replaced in the role by the Bush Theatre’s Josie Rourke.

The Donmar’s production of Luise Miller features set design by Peter McKintosh, lighting by Paule Constable and a score by Adam Cork.
