1st Night Photos: Old Vic’s Farcical Flea

Date: 15 December 2010

A plethora of stars turned out for the opening of Richard Eyre’s Old Vic revival of French farce A Flea in Her Ear last night (14 December 2011, previews from 4 December), including actors Hugh Bonneville, Jonathan Price, Emily Mortimer and Edward Fox (who was there supporting his actor son Freddie Fox).

Starring Tom Hollander and Lisa Dillon, the production, which runs until 5 March 2011, lures Eyre back to the Old Vic for the first time since he helmed Trevor GriffithsComedians there in 1974. The ensemble also includes Jonathan Cake, Oliver Cotton, Fiona Glascott, John Marquez and Tim McMullan.

In Georges Feydeau’s comedy of errors, Raymonde (Dillon) suspects her husband Victor (Hollander) of infidelity and enlists the help of her friend Lucienne (Glascott) to set a trap for him. Their plan misfires when the anonymous letter they send him suggesting a rendezvous leads to a sequence of mistaken identities and bruised egos.

John Mortimer’s version of the 1907 classic has previously been performed on the Old Vic stage in 1989 (starring Jim Broadbent) and in 1966 (starring Albert Finney, under the auspices of the then-resident National Theatre).
