Photos: Savoy Hosts Evening Standard Awards

Date: 29 November 2010

The Evening Standard Theatre Awards were held at the newly reopened Savoy Hotel last night (28 November 2010), with the National and the Royal Court Theatres walking away with four awards each, in an evening dominated by the subsidised theatre sector. Stephen Fry hosted the event, which also saw Liam Neeson present the Best Actress Award, renamed in memory of his late wife Natasha Richardson.

The National's Rory Kinnear and Nancy Carroll won Best Actor and Best Actress prizes whilst NT associate Howard Davies scooped the prize for Best Director for for The White Guard at the NT Lyttelton and All My Sons at the Apollo Theatre.

At the Royal Court Daniel Kaluuya was awarded the special Editor's Award for a Shooting Star for boxing drama Sucker Punch whilst Bruce Norris' Clybourne Park won the award for Best Play. The Court's fourth award of the night was for Most Promising Playwright, which went to Anya Reiss for Spur of the Moment, which she wrote while on a young writers' course at the theatre when she was only 17. Earthquakes in London and Sucker Punch designer Miriam Buether took home the Award for Best Design taking the theatres' tally to four apiece.
