1st Night Photos: More Young Punks Rock LyricDate: 9 September 2009Simon Stephens' Punk Rock, the inaugural production of Sean Holmes' tenure as artistic director of the Lyric Hammersmith (See News, 3 Jun 2009), opened last night (9 September 2009, previews from 3 September). The play, described by Whatsonstage.com's Michael Coveney as “something of a companion piece” to Spring Awakening (See Today's Review), the alt-rock musical which was a hit for the Lyric earlier in the year, draws on Stephens’ own experience as a teacher to paint a portrait of seven young people with their sense of dislocation and simmering violence. Several members of the Spring Awakening cast turned out to lend their support last night, as did actors, writers and celebrities including Ian McKellen, Martin Sherman, Andy Nyman, The League of Gentlemen's Jeremy Dyson and TV presenter Miquita Oliver.
