1st Night Photos: Stott's Bridge, Postlethwaite's LearDate: 6 February 2009
It's been a busy week in theatreland, with each night seeing the opening of one, if not two major productions (See News, 2 Feb 2009). Last night (5 February, previews from 22 January), it was the turn of Lindsay Posner's revival of Arthur Miller's A View From the Bridge to take the spotlight at the Duke of York's, with Ken Stott leading the cast as Eddie Carbone.
In Miller’s 1955 play, which hasn’t been seen in the West End since 1995, Carbone, a head-strong longshoreman, is protectively raising his wife’s orphaned niece, Catherine. But when Eddie’s feelings for Catherine develop from paternal protectiveness to sexual desire, his struggle to contain his emotions leads him on a path of self destruction transforming him from a respected, honourable man to a virtual stranger shamed and broken by his own actions.
Stott is joined in the cast by Hayley Atwell (Catherine), Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (Beatrice), Gerard Monaco (Marco) and Harry Lloyd (Rodolpho).

For 1st Night Photos, our Whatsonstage.com photographer Dan Wooller was on hand for the aftershow party, held at London's Ruby Blue. Joining the company were guests including Rosamund Pike, Talulah Riley, Iain Glen, Lindsay Duncan, Lauren Crace, Neil Pearson and Arthur Miller's sister, actress Joan Copeland.
On Wednesday (4 February, previews from 29 January), Rupert Goold's production of King Lear, starring Pete Postlethwaite in the title role, transferred to the Young Vic following its premiere at the Liverpool Everyman in November (See News, 23 Sep 2008).
Acting alongside Postlethwaite, who is tackling Lear for the first time in his prolific career, are John Shrapnel (as the Earl of Gloucester), Forbes Masson (the Fool), Nigel Cooke (Earl of Kent), Caroline Faber (Goneril), Charlotte Randle (Regan), Amanda Hale (Cordelia), Jonjo O’Neill (Edmund) and Tobias Menzies (Edgar).

The production, which has undergone several changes following its largely poor reviews in Liverpool (See The Goss, 25 Nov 2008) is designed by Giles Cadle, with lighting by Howard Harrison, costumes by Nicky Gillibrand and music and sound by Adam Cork. It continues at the Young Vic until 29 March.
