1st Night Photos: Seagrove & Andrews Share Letter

Date: 2 May 2007

Jenny Seagrove and Anthony Andrews returned to the West End last night (1 May 2007, previews from 19 April) in a new production of W Somerset Maugham’s imperial melodrama The Letter at Wyndham’s Theatre.

When the wife of a Malaysian rubber planter, Leslie Crosbie (Seagrove), is witnessed murdering a local playboy, she claims it was self defence. Utterly convinced of her innocence, her husband hires family friend Howard Joyce (Andrews) to defend her. The day before the case comes to trial, a mysterious letter comes to light, casting doubt on her integrity and threatening to cost her and her family everything.

For 1st Night Photos, our Whatsonstage.com photographer Dan Wooller was on hand for the curtain call at Wyndham’s Theatre and for the post-show party at the Waldorf Hilton along with the cast and first night guests including Peter Sissons Gloria Hunniford, Peter Bowles, Georgina Simpson, Simon MacCorkindale and Susan George.

The Letter was adapted by Maugham from one of his own short stories, which was based on a real life ‘crime passionel’ Maugham heard about when he was travelling in the Far East. William Wyler’s 1940 film version starred Bette Davis and Herbert Marshall. The last major London stage revival starred Joanna Lumley at the Lyric Hammersmith in 1995. The new production is directed by Alan Strachan and designed by Paul Farnsworth. Also in the cast are: Jamie Zubairi, Andrew Joshi, Peter Sandys-Clarke, Andrew Charleson and Jason Chan. The Bill Kenwright production is booking to 11 August 2007.
