1st Night Photos: Sinitta's Hot on Menopause Mum

Date: 19 April 2007

Former pop star Sinitta, currently one of the judges on ITV’s Grease Is the Word, certainly doesn’t look old enough to be going through “the change”, but she seemed to be having fun at the opening Menopause The Musical nonetheless (See News, 14 Feb 2007) – possibly because it stars her mother, Seventies recording artist Miquel Brown.

At the curtain call for the UK premiere last night (18 April 2007) at the Shaw Theatre, Sinitta took to the stage with other female members of the first night audience, as well as the show’s creator and producer, Jeanie Linders, and the four-strong company of women, comprising Su Pollard, Samantha Hughes and Amanda Symonds in addition to Brown.

In Menopause The Musical, four women – referred to as Power Woman, Rutland Housewife, Soap Star and Earth Mother - meet at a lingerie sale with nothing in common but a black lace bra… and hot flushes, night sweats, memory loss, chocolate binges, not enough sex and day-to-day challenges with ageing parents, children and partners. The 90-minute show features re-lyricised parodies of 25 Baby Boomer hits including “I Heard It thru the Grapevine, You No Longer See 39” and the Motown classic “My Thighs”.

For 1st Night Photos, our Whatsonstage.com photographer Dan Wooller was on hand at the Shaw Theatre, Euston Road, for arrivals, curtain call and post-show party. Other first night attendees included: Vicki and Louise Michelle, Barry Howard, Sally Ann Field, Jimmy Perry, Louise Jameson, Diana Moran and menopause agony aunt Maryon Stewart.

Since Menopause The Musical first opened in Orlando, Florida, in 2001, the show has been seen by more than eight million people (mainly women) in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines, and has garnered a cult following.
