Hairspray extends UK tour to new venues

The musical will visit eight new venues in the UK and Ireland

Hairspray has announced it will extend its UK tour to a further eight venues throughout 2018.

The musical will now visit Stoke, Oxford, Newcastle, Eastbourne, York, Swansea, Bournemouth and make a return to Dublin next summer.

The production stars Matt Rixon as Edna Turnblad alongside Rebecca Mendoza making her professional debut as Tracy Turnblad. Norman Pace stars as Wilbur Turnblad and Brenda Edwards as Motormouth Maybelle. The piece has choreography by Drew McOnie and is directed by Paul Kerryson.

In the WhatsOnStage review of the show, writer Diane Parkes praised the show, with its 'great songs, plenty of lively dances and lashings of humour.'

Hairspray has music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan and is based on the 1988 film of the same name, which originally starred Ricki Lake and Divine.

It tells the story of teenager Tracy Turnblad who dreams of being the star of a TV dance show. Songs in the musical are "You Can't Stop The Beat", "Good Morning Baltimore" and "Big, Blonde and Beautiful".

The new tour dates and locations are Stoke Regent Theatre (11 – 16 June), Oxford New Theatre (18 – 23 June), Newcastle Theatre Royal (25 – 30 June), Eastbourne Theatre (2 – 7 July), Dublin Bord Gais (9 – 14 July), York Grand Opera House (16 – 21 July), Swansea Grand (23 – 28 July) and Bournemouth Pavilion (30 July – 4 August).

Hairspray continues on its UK tour through until 4 August 2018.
