Sacred Returns to Chelsea Theatre for Year-Round Event
The Chelsea Theatre has announced that its annual season Sacred, an exploration of live art and contemporary performance which has been running since 2006, is now to be performed seasonally with special events scattered throughout the year.
This November, the event is to have an international link with Brazilian artists based at Sergio Porto in Rio de Janeiro. Contemporary dancer and choreographer, Gustavo Ciríaco is to return after a successful collaboration with the Chelsea Theatre this past July.
Other highlights from Brazil include a London premiere from Brazilian dance artist Luiz de Abreu, with his controversial piece O Samba do Crioulo Doido, (Samba of the Crazy Brotha) which will be performed on 26 and 27 November. On 25 November Brighton-based company Dorothy’s Shoes pays homage to Brazil with a world premiere of Flying Down to Rio. This will be an interactive installation and performance piece based offering a reflection on cultural tourism.
Other performances at the eclectic festival include Threesome, which are physical pieces by UK artists Martin O’Brien, Gillie Kleiman and Joseph Mercier. These individual works: Mucus Factory, Ophelia is Not Yet Dead and Giselle (or I’m too Horny to be a Prince) are provocative and sensual in a themed night of work examining body issues.
Further exploits include Bristol’s Action Hero which also returns to the festival with a London premiere of Frontman on 25 November. The duo featured in the 2009 event and this time performs a brazen, half-cut version of a faded comeback gig, balanced between euphoria and a car crash.
Francesca Millican Slater features in a matinee performance of Me, Myself and Miss Gibbson 26 November and David Hoyle offers some “dark yet hilarious” cabaret in conjunction with Club de Fromage.
