Five Reasons to See … SACRED InTRANSIT

For one day only this Saturday (30 July 2011), SACRED joins forces with the Arts Service of Kensington & Chelsea to present SACRED InTRANSIT.

The event invites audiences to consider walking as an artform, through the unknown streets of Worlds End and Chelsea Wharf eventually reaching Kings Road whilst appreciating the sites with Lost and Found, Amy Sharrock‘s Urban Walking Guide, and Here Whilst We Walk, Gustavo Ciriaco and Andrea Sonnberger‘s close detail tour of the subtle sites of the area.

There are also performances, such as Manuel Vason‘s image making workshop and the Ragroof Theatre’s dance spectacle involving foxtrot, tango, jive, beautiful gowns and great music, giving the opportunity for everyone to put on their dancing shoes.

This is an action-packed event full of walking and movement, with all but one activity completely free of charge. Artistic director Francis Alexander gives us his five reasons to see SACRED InTRANSIT.

1. Experience the sense of change

Chelsea Theatre’s SACRED seasons have showcased the best international, non-traditional performances.  Past artists have included US luminaries such as legendary performer Ron Athey, esteemed director Richard Maxwell and multiple award-winning New York playwright, Young Lean Lee.

This year SACRED looks at the politics of walking courtesy of Gustavo Ciriaco, Andrea Sonnberger, Amy Sharrocks and the Walking Artists Network. Experience the sense of change, the dynamic of moving through walking and participatory performances.

2.Wander the back streets of old Chelsea

Spend a Saturday in World’s End, wandering the back streets of old Chelsea, strolling along the river. Walking performance literally grabs you without you noticing. At first you might feel like a bit of a old roué following a group of artists when you could be reading the papers – the next minute you’ve been captivated by the sense that walking gives you.

Calm meditation is one way of describing it, and you see and feel all sorts of new sights and and sounds. Honest.

3. Get fit

While you’re walking, dancing and discovering…

4. Make new friends

You’ll get quite close to some people while you’re walking with them – And if you’re tangoing at Ragroof Theatre’s tea dance (partners not required), well, erm… Tangos can get quite intimate… you might not leave alone!

5. It’s free

Except the cost of cake at the tea dance!
