Pentameters Theatre stages Joyce’s Portrait of the Artist

James Joyce’s classic novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is being brought to the stage at the Pentameters Theatre in July.

As a tribute to Joyce’s 130th birthday anniversary, Tom Neill adapts and directs a new version starring Emily Carmichael, Georgina Periam, Victoria Porter, Peter Saracen and Paul Taylor.

The original semi-autobiographical work focuses on Stephen Dedalus, a young man living in Ireland at the end of the 19th Century. In an unfamiliar country, Dedulas starts questioning his Catholic upbringing and turns to a wider spiritual and artistic existence.

“The novel is rife with powerful emotions and complex thoughts,” said Tom Neill, “so I am putting the focus on Stephen’s perception of the world, not its reality. Like the book, I want to draw you in to his consciousness and show you something overwhelming and enlightening.”

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man runs from 12 to 29 July 2012 (previews from 10 July).
