Five Reasons to See … Spinach

Cassandra
Compton
and Ben Gerrard play Kate and Tom in Spinach
at the King’s Head Theatre is Islington. Set the morning after a
crazy night, the new musical sees these characters trying to
untangle the chaos of the previous evening. It runs until 7 July.

Here
Cassandra and Ben give us 5 reasons why you should go along to see
it.

1. It’s
like no other job we’ve ever done

It’s
a roller-coaster from start to finish. A fast-paced romantic comedy
thriller that is entirely sung through with us never leaving the
stage. Well, Ben does at one point but that’s just to take his
clothes off and put a towel on! We’ve been told there’s a good
chemistry between us, which can’t be a bad thing in a rom-com.

2. It’s
a great cast

We’ve
had the best time in rehearsals, working with the fantastic Claire
Greenway
and Craig Whittaker. The show’s writers have added two
new numbers and an extended ending to the original production, which
began its life at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester last year.
We’re all just so excited to get the show in front of a London
audience now.

3. It’s
got a broad appeal

If
last year’s run is anything to go by, this show works on many
different levels and appeals to different audiences. People who love
musicals or opera or straight theatre will all find something in it
for them and because of the way Waters Edge creates its work, it’s
going to be accessible to a non-theatre going audience too: it’s
relevant and entertaining to people who might not usually access the
arts. We’re really delighted that the company is working with
homeless charities and community organisations in London to bring in
new audiences.

4. The
fact that it’s entirely sung does not distract from the
story

You
can’t help but get involved in the plot and the plight of the
characters. The music, which takes us from romance to peril to comedy
in a flash, becomes almost subliminal.

5. It’s
great music!
At
the end of the day, the play works because the music does. It carries
you through this insane journey from start to finish and doesn’t
let you off until it reaches its climactic ending. Don’t miss this
opportunity to see and hear this fantastic show!
