Il Seraglio. A Spanish nobleman sails to the shores of Turkey to search for his beloved - who by this time is imprisoned in a harem and the apple of both the Bassa Selim's and the Chief Keeper's eyes.
Sung in German with English supertitles. Oct 22 is a Glyndebourne Performance for Schools programme.
The opera tells the story of how one old man learns a harsh and expensive lesson when he tries to stand in the way of true love. In the finest traditions of the genre we enjoy disguises, crooked lawyers, scheming doctors and at its heart, two love-truck youngsters trying to find a way to be together. Above all, Donizetti’s score is suffused with beauty and vivacity from which a torrent of wonderful music tumbles. First performed in 1843.
A comic operetta with a Japanese theme. Songs such as 'Three Little Maids from School', 'A Wandering Minstrel', 'A Most Humane Mikado' etc. One of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular works. In the town of Titipu, local government has fallen into the hands of two dubious characters: Ko-Ko, in charge of public executions; and Pooh-Bah, who has a finger in every pie. A young man arrives who, unknown to most, is Nanki-Poo, son of the Mikado. Fleeing an arranged marriage to the elderly Katisha, he falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum, Ko-Ko's fiancée. When the Mikado arrives, thirsty for executions, Ko-Ko thinks he has the perfect plan...until Katisha turns up, bent on revenge.
