Tara Fitzgerald is to star in Royal & Derngate's production of Patrick Hamilton's psychological thriller Gaslight, which opens in October.

Directed by Lucy Bailey, the production plays on Northampton's Royal stage from 20 October 2015 (previews from 16 October).

Hamilton's 1938 play centres on a Victorian housewife, Bella Manningham, who believes she's losing her mind. However, questions about her husband Jack's behaviour and true identity are aroused following the unexpected arrival of a detective.

Fitzgerald will star as Bella, the role played in the classic film adaptation by Ingrid Bergman.

Well-known for regular appearances in TV series Waking the Dead and Game of Thrones, Fitzgerald's recent theatre credits include leading roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Almeida and Donmar Warehouse.

Gaslight is part of Royal & Derngate's Made in Northampton 2015 season, which has included productions of King John (with Shakespeare's Globe) and the world premiere of Arthur Miller's The Hook (with Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse).

It will feature design by William Dudley, lighting design by Chris Davey, sound design by Mic Pool and original music by Nell Catchpole.
