A sell-out at the Barbican in 2005, director

Following our sell-out event to The Country Wife, we return to the Theatre Royal Haymarket for the next production in its inaugural in-house season under the direction of Jonathan Kent: a revival of Edward Bond’s rarely seen modern classic, starring three-time Olivier Award winner Eileen Atkins, David Haig
and Marcia Warren.

A wild storm shakes a small East Anglian seaside village and sets off a series of events that changes the lives of all its residents. Set in the high Edwardian world of 1907, The Sea is a fascinating blend of wild farce, high comedy, biting social satire and bleak poetic tragedy. According to Kent, formerly joint artistic director of the Almeida Theatre, Bond, whose other plays include Saved, ranks as “one of the most important and interesting voices in British theatre”.

The Sea premiered at the Royal Court in 1973 and has only had one major London revival since, at the National Theatre in 1991. At the TRH, Eileen Atkins stars as Mrs Rafi, the role played by Corale Brown and Judi Dench at the Court and NT respectively.
