Broadside Take on Orwell's 1984

Date: 29 October 2010

Following on from the public and critical success of The Canterbury Tales, Accidental Death of an Anarchist, Othello, and Lisa’s Sex Strike, Northern Broadsides’ new production, George Orwell’s 1984 is set to explode on stage with the grit, edge and vitality, which is the modus operandi of this outstanding company. Promising to be their most technically advanced production to date, this electrifying new stage version has been “re-imagined” for the stage by prolific playwright Nick Lane, and is presented by Northern Broadsides and The Dukes, Lancaster in association with Stroud Theatre Company.

George Orwell’s stark, uncompromising futuristic vision pulls no punches, resonating now more than ever. In a world of “dodgy dossiers”, rendition, torture, CCTV, Murdoch, spin and political corruption, truth has indeed become as strange as this chilling fiction. It compels us to question how inured we have become to the excessive influence of mass media and the immoderate power of government.

The cast includes Nick Haverson (Tim Burton’s Sweeny Todd, Ashes to Ashes, Kate Ambler(A Man with Two Gaffers for Northern Broadsides), Chris Garner (BBC’s Mistresses and is directed by Conrad Nelson (Canterbury Tales), with Audio/Visuals by David Phillips and animation by Rob Pointon and Karen Sayle

1984 plays at the Tobacco Factory, Bristol 23 to 27 November 2010 as part of a UK tour.
