Scots Darlings Cast In Classic Masterpiece

Date: 17 July 2009

His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen has assembled a top flight Scots cast for their new production of Neil M Gunn’s epic adventure The Silver Darlings.

The 10-strong cast include Scottish theatre veterans Jimmy Chisholm, Meg Fraser, Ann Louise Ross, Tom McGovern, Alan McHugh and Michael McKenzie, as well as rising young stars Finn den Hertog, Sally Reid, Helen Mackay and Cameron Mowat.

The creative team for the production is headed up by director Kenny Ireland, a prominent figure in Scottish theatre and former artistic director of Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre, and producer Duncan Hendry, chief executive of Aberdeen Performing Arts, which operates His Majesty’s Theatre.

The novel is being adapted for the stage by renowned playwright Peter Arnott, with set and costumes by internationally-acclaimed designer Hayden Griffin, music by award-winning composer Matthew Scott, lighting design by John Harris and choreography by Rita Henderson.

Producer Duncan Hendry said, “we are really looking forward to starting work on the production of The Silver Darlings and are thrilled to have assembled such a strong cast - several of whom are from the North of Scotland."

“There are some familiar faces in the cast such as Ann Louise Ross who starred in Sunshine on Leith, Alan McHugh - an HMT panto regular - and Michael McKenzie who played a lead role in The Life of Grassic Gibbon last year at HMT. It will be great fun bringing this classic Scots novel to the stage in this brand new adaptation.”

Rehearsals for The Silver Darlings begin at His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday, July 27, and the production opens for a 10-day run at HMT from Friday, August 28, before going on tour to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Dundee, Perth and Wick.
