Glyndebourne screens Rossini opera

Glyndebourne screens Rossini opera

Date: 3 March 2009

As part of their ongoing series of operas in cinemas, Glyndebourne will be giving a number of matinee screenings of Rossini's La Cenerentola on Monday 9th March 2009 at 2pm, in conjunction with Vue Cinemas.

The opera is based on the story of Cinderella and Romanian mezzo Ruxandra Donose stars as the downtrodden heroine, while Maxim Mironov is her ‘Prince Charming’. The production under Glyndebourne's Music Director Vladimir Jurowski, was directed by Peter Hall in 2005 and has become an enduring part of the Sussex opera house’s repertoire.

The recent cinema performances (The Royal Opera have been doing the same) have given regional audiences who can’t get to the opera houses or pay the relatively high ticket prices the chance to see some of the best productions on offer in a communal environment. It may not be quite the same as sitting in the stalls but it beats lounging in front of the telly with a DVD.

Other operas in this cinema season have been Handel’s Guilio Cesare, in the dazzling David McVicar production, and Laurent Pelly’s recent Hansel und Gretel.

There are performances of La Cenerentola at VUE cinemas in Birmingham, Blackburn, Bristol Longwell, Camberley, Carlisle, Cheshire Oaks, Croydon Parkway, Finchley Road, Fulham Broadway, Hamilton, Harrow, Hull, Islington, Leeds Kirkstall, Leicester, Newcastle Under Lyme, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Reading, Romford, Southport, Staines, Thurrock and Watford & Worcester.

For booking information, visit www.myvue.com or telephone 08712 240 240.

When was this entry posted? I am getting tired of reading about HD opera transmissions AFTER they have taken place, with no advertising beforehand of what they are, and when they will be transmitted. I was informed by Imax, when booking for La Cenerentola yesterday, that no publicity was given out when they started the scheme of transmissions from the Met last year, with the result that people heard about these - as, indeed, I did myself - by word of mouth, leading to almost deserted cinemas. Now they have a thriving audience for these transmissions, and I already know, having been to the Met myself whilst recently in NYC, what the 2009/10 transmissions and dates are going to be. When will ALL opera companies recognise that this is a way of getting additional finance as well as doing what they OUGHT to be doing in the first place, providing opera cheaply to the general public, and advertising widely that these transmissions are taking place? - Bernard Bucan
