La Boheme & Jerry Herman musical premiere lead second Charing Cross season

Date: 14 August 2012

The Charing Cross Theatre has announced its second season since the venue, formerly the New Players Theatre, was acquired and rebranded in 2011.

OperaUpClose's English-language adaptation of Puccini's La Boheme, which won a Whatsonstage.com award for Best Off-West End production in 2011, as well as an Olivier for Best New Opera, opens at the Charing Cross on 30 October 2012 and runs until 5 January 2013.

The critically-acclaimed piece was at one stage the UK's longest continuously-running opera. Robert Norton-Hale, who adapted the piece into English, will direct, with musical direction by Elspeth Wilkes.

The season continues with the UK premiere of Dear World, a musical by Jerry Hermam which opened on Broadway in 1969 but has never been performed outside of the US. The production, which opens on 4 February 2013 and runs until 30 March 2013, will be a new version by David Thompson, directed and choreographed by Gillian Lynne.

The musical, set in post-WWII Paris, will star Tony award-winner Betty Buckley, with orchestrations by Sarah Travis, with Kevin Amos as the musical director.

The season also features a new comedy, The Man on Her Mind, by American writer Alan Hruska. Directed by Bruce Guthrie and starring Amy McAllister, Samuel James, Georgia MacKenzie and Shane Attwooll. The show runs from 5 September 2012 to 27 October 2012.
