Above the Stag loses Victoria home due to redevelopment work

London fringe venue Above The Stag is to lose its home in Victoria after only three years of operation.

The closure is due to the fact that The Stag pub, whose function room houses the theatre, will be bulldozed as part of redevelopment work in the area.

Artistic director Peter Bull said: "We are commited to continuing Above The Stag's success, and we therefore urgently need a new home. We would love to hear from property developers, pubs with unused function spaces, or any other property owner who would welcome a resident theatre.”

A farewell evening of drinks and entertainment will be held on the evening of 8 March, comprising songs from previous shows “and maybe a monologue or two.”

Above The Stag is London's only theatre with a core programme of gay-themed and gay-interest work. Since opening in October 2008 it has produced new musicals, dramas, adaptations, costume dramas, comedies and reviews, as well as a popular annual pantomime.

Bull, who is calling for donations for a ‘Moving On Fund’, added: “We have built something of a family at Above The Stag and that includes our enthusiastic audience. What we have achieved over the past 3 years is too valuable to lose, but we need all the help we can get to make sure we find a new home.”
