Opening: Jellyfish, Remains, Park, Woman & Tiny

As Theatreland begins to return to normality after the Edinburgh Fringe and the Bank Holiday, amongst the major openings in London during this shorter week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Tuesday 31 August 2010 (previews from 26 August), Simon Wu’s Oikos, a Red Room special commission examining how our society must adapt in to survive the future, inaugurates the Jellyfish Theatre, the UK’s first fully-functioning theatre made entirely from recycled materials, which is being erected for six weeks at a Southwark playground. Oikos continues until 18 September and is followed by another commission, Protozoa from 23 September to 9 October.

ALSO TONIGHT, Rebecca Gatward’s 2009 touring production of The Comedy of Errors touches down at Shakespeare’s Globe for a week to 4 September.

ALSO TONIGHT, Kate Dimbleby (daughter of David) honours her heroines of song in her new show I'm a Woman, which plays for five weeks to 3 October at the New End Theatre.

ALSO TONIGHT, Alex Loveless’ musical version of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Booker Prize-winning 1989 novel The Remains of the Day, which also inspired the 1993 Oscar-winning film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, premieres at the fringe Union Theatre in Southwark for a run to 25 September.


OPENING WEDNESDAY, 1 September 2010 (previews from 25 August), at west London’s Gate Theatre, joint artistic director Natalie Abrahami adapts and directs Lorrie Moore’s short story How to Be an Other Woman, running until 2 October.

ALSO ON WEDNESDAY (previews from 31 August), mindreader Chris Dugdale works his magic for a season to 19 September at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith.


OPENING THURSDAY, 2 September 2010 (previews from 26 August), Martin Freeman and Sophie Thompson are amongst the ensemble cast in the premiere of Clybourne Park at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Downstairs. The new play, which tracks the changes in a once white-only US neighbourhood over the 50 years since the first black family moved in, reunites American playwright Bruce Norris with artistic director Dominic Cooke, who launched his tenure in Sloane Square with Norris’ The Pain and the Itch in 2007. The new production continues until 2 October.

ALSO ON THURSDAY (previews from 31 August), Aline Waites directs the 50th-anniversary production of Waiting in the Wings, Noel Coward’s rarely performed play set in a retirement home for actresses, running at the fringe Pentameters Theatre in Hampstead until 18 September.

ALSO ON THURSDAY and Friday, Watford Palace Theatre presents its new World Cup-inspired community musical Hello, Mister Capello in partnership with Watford Football Club.


OPENING FRIDAY, 3 September 2010 (previews from 1 September), the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn presents the British premiere of Tiny Kushner, a season of five one-act plays by Angels in America Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist Tony Kushner, performed by an all-American cast for a limited season to 25 September.

ALSO ON FRIDAY (previews from 1 September), The Thunderbolt, the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond revives Arthur Wing Pinero’s 1908 play about a large middle-class family fighting over a brewer’s inheritance, for a run to 2 October.
