Our Lady of the Goldfinches set for Unity & LowryDate: 23 April 2012 Local Theatre company - Small Mercies are bringing Our Lady of the Goldfinches to the Unity in Liverpool, followed by dates at the Lowry in Salford.
The play written by Janet McNulty examines sacrifice, martyrdom and the redemptive quality of love -against the backdrop of the IRA.
The story of Jean McConville's murder by the IRA continues to be familiar from press reports. The story of her daughter's attempt to make sense of her death is interwoven with the recent history of reconciliation in the North of Ireland. The play follows Jean's journey from a council flat in the war-torn West Belfast of ‘The Troubles’ to a beach in the Irish Republic, the site of her execution.
Lady of the Goldfinches is directed by Bill Hopkinson and features Rachel Priest, [Bairbre Ní hAodha], Cellan Scott and Lee Godwin and is at the Unity on 8 May and the Lowry from 10 - 12 May.
