Candoco open 20 Tour in Salford

Candoco Dance Company is travelling to the past, present and future to celebrate its 20th anniversary with three bold commissions which the company will tour this autumn and Turning 20 opens at the Lowry.

The show sees Candoco restaging Trisha Brown’s signature work, Set and Reset which was premiered in 1983, confirming Brown as a pioneer of contemporary dance. Using the original concepts from her playful choreography, the work is set to a driving score by mercurial composer Laurie Anderson, who literally re-set her album, "Long Time No See", for the purpose. 

Brown collaborated regularly with artist Robert Rauschenberg whose beautiful set designs and costumes form the basis for a new set design by visual artist David Lock and costume designs by Candoco co-founder, Celeste Dandeker, for this new production Set And Reset/Reset in which Brown’s choreography will be combined with Candoco’s dancers’ own.

French artist Rachid Ouramdane intertwines strong visuals and striking costumes with unforgettable soundscapes to create an atmospheric piece. Drawing on the performers’ pasts, he reveals portraits of life to create poetic, often dark, and ultimately compassionate work.

Finally, in a very exciting first for Candoco, Matthias Sperling captures the uniqueness of one dancer, Vicky Malin, in a lighthearted solo. This intimate encounter allows the audience to reflect and focus on every movement detail and to indulge in the feeling it evokes.

The restaging project, Set and Reset/Reset has been commissioned by Dance Umbrella and Turning 20 is at the Lowry from 14 - 15 September.
