UYT brings Dark Side to Unity

Date: 22 February 2011

A Liverpool youth theatre group is bringing together untold mysteries about its establishment’s own property for a new production titled Dark Side of the Building.

Opening next Thursday, the group returns to the Unity Theatre based in Hope Place, off Hope Street in the city centre, with its latest production that aims to take audiences “into the darker, unknown history of one of the iconic buildings of Liverpool’s cultural quarter”.

The group began a discussion based around the topic of ‘what makes scary theatre’ at the end of 2010 and formed ideas before developing the project in January. Working closely with assistant director Laura Campbell, director Carl Cockram, and script writer Tracey Aston, a piece was completely devised, written and is being performed by 18 youth theatre members.

Unity’s youth theatre group works alongside professional theatre companies, performers and practitioners.

The group was set up in spring 2004 by local actress Helen Flooks, who tragically died during a holiday in Chile three years ago.

The group is aimed at 14-18 year olds and although places are full at the moment there is a waiting list, Unity said.

Dark Side of the Building runs from Thursday 3 March until Saturday 5 March and is suitable for those aged over 13 years old.

The cast includes Bibi Amadi, Jessica Cody, Eilish Clarke, Francesca Davies, Mark Simpson, Jahnay Dalrymple, Joe Adamson, James Bentham, Tom Kelly, Ryan Kelly, Sarah McGuinness, Alistair Reid, Sophie Taylor, Zoe McGarry, Chloe Nezianya, Callum Fitzpatrick, Aimee Marnell, Andrew Fletcher.

Unity said audiences will move around the theatre building in groups of eight, setting off at 30 minute intervals starting in the foyer area.
