Cast: Jenny Platt at RET Spinach

Former Coronation Street star Jenny Platt stars in Manchester-based theatre company Waters Edge Arts launches the Royal Exchange’s new Spring / Summer 2011 Studio Season with the world premiere of Spinach – an all sung darkly witty romantic thriller which opens next week. 

It’s dark, it’s dingy and nothing looks remotely familiar, so when strangers Tom and Kate wake up, panic and fear set in as they try to remember what happened, where they are, and why on earth they are tied up – to each other!

As they come to realise that they’ve been drugged and kidnapped, both become closer to each other as they try to piece together the events of the last few days. Yet as each memory becomes clearer, so do the steps to knowing their captors and their terrifying fate…

Presented in association with the Royal Exchange, Spinach is the brand new play from South Manchester-based theatre company Waters Edge Arts. 

Family-run charity Waters Edge Arts, launched in July 2010 after joining forces with Chorlton Methodist Church to create a local community centre, inhabiting amateur, professional and children’s theatre companies.

The venue – which has become home to the Manchester Road Players since the Fifties – is now offering opportunities for people to get involved both as spectators and participants in one-off workshops, regular classes, projects and shows.

Waters Edge Arts Artistic Director Janine Waters said: “We are only at the beginning of our journey and there is still a great deal to do, but we feel confident that in time, this will become an excellent resource for the whole community.

“We are surrounded by creative people and we hope the people of Chorlton and Manchester will join us in realising this exciting opportunity.”
 
Playing the role of Tom is classically trained actor and music performer, David Hunter. David supported some of the UK's biggest bands including The Feeling, Scouting For Girls and most recently McFly on the full British Arena Tour, playing to over 200,000 people in venues including the M.E.N Arena and Wembley. Having disbanded earlier this year, David has returned to acting but still work within music, with his most recent theatre credits including Love Shift, part of Pub (Royal Exchange) and Moving On (The Lowry).  

Playing his captive partner Kate, is Jenny Platt, who is best known to audiences as playing the character Violet in Coronation Street. Jenny’s recent theatre credits include Twelfth Night (Stafford Shakespeare Festival), Chimps (The Wolsey Theatre), The Merchant Of Venice (Bolton Octagon) and The Straits (Paines Plough).

Spinach is at the Royal Exchange Studio from 3 - 12 March.
