Cheltenham Launch for Pullman's Firework-Maker's Daughter

Cheltenham Launch for Pullman's Firework-Maker's Daughter

Date: 1 October 2010

Philip Pullman’s brilliant and inspiring story - The Firework-Maker’s Daughter is to be brought vividly to life on stage in a new production by the acclaimed Birmingham Stage Company at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham.

Lila dreams of becoming a firework-maker but her hopes are dashed when her father tells her it is no job for a girl. Setting out in secret for Mount Merapi in search of the elusive royal sulphur, Lila faces pirates and supernatural creatures until her friend Chulak arrives with Hamlet, the elephant to help her. Soon she has to return to save her imprisoned father with a firework display that must rival the best on earth!

The Birmingham Stage Company is a leading producer of high-quality children’s shows and has toured many productions, including Horrible Histories; The Jungle Book; James and the Giant Peach; Witches and Danny, The Champion of the World. Philip Pullman has written numerous children’s books, including The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass and is the winner of several prizes and awards, including The Carnegie Medal, The Guardian Children’s Book Award and the Whitbread Book of the Year Award for The Amber Spyglass (the first time this prestigious prize had ever been given to a children’s book).

This production is directed by Phil Clark, well known to Cheltenham audiences for his many, superb panto productions, having directed the Everyman’s last three hit Christmas shows, and returning later this year with this season’s Cinderella.

The Firework-Maker’s Daughter promises to be a truly wondrous and enchanting story, and plays at The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham 20 – 23 October before touring the country.
