Amy Nuttall returns to Octagon for Streetcar

Date: 30 July 2010

The Octagon Theatre Bolton starts its new season with one of the greatest American dramas of all time, Tennessee WilliamsA Streetcar Named Desire. Continuing David Thacker’s passion for directing emotionally dynamic plays, Streetcar takes you right to the heart of post-war New Orleans, where passions run high and individual actions lead to devastating consequences.

Two sisters, separated by time and distance, are reunited when Blanche DuBois arrives unexpectedly on the doorstep of her sister, Stella. Blanche, the fragile older sister, is unaccustomed to her sister’s new lifestyle. She clashes with Stella’s volatile husband Stanley and as secrets begin to unfold it is clear that there is more to Blanche than meets the eye.

A Streetcar Named Desire earned Tennessee Williams the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948 as well as countless other awards. It then went on to become an Oscar-winning film, lighting up the silver screen and making a star out of the previously unknown actor, Marlon Brando.

Artistic Director of the Octagon David Thacker explains what makes this particular play so appealing: “A Streetcar Named Desire brings to the Octagon stage one of the giants of American Theatre and continues the tradition of great American drama at the Octagon. This is a play that packs an enormous emotional punch, with a compelling narrative that will leave any audience deeply moved. This is a play for everybody, for people of all backgrounds, regular theatre-goers and those who have never been to the theatre before.”

The cast includes former Emmerdale actress Amy Nuttall playing the role of Stella. Amy returns to the Octagon following her recent performance as Emily in The Hired Man earlier this year. Octagon favourite and former star of The Bill, Huw Higginson, will play the role of Harold ‘Mitch’ Mitchell. Huw has previously appeared on the Octagon stage in All My Sons, And Did Those Feet and Comedians

A Streetcar Named Desire runs at the Bolton Octagon from 16 Sept - 9 Oct.
