Nuffield announces Autumn Season

The Nuffield, Southampton, has unveiled its new season programme for Autumn and Winter 2010.

Punchy dialogue and dry one-liners mark the start of the new season in the UK premiere of hazardously funny one-act Comedies by Woody Allen (22 Sep - 9 Oct) , directed by The Nuffield’s artistic director Patrick Sandford. These gloriously imaginative short plays about storytelling and wicked relationships – both in and out of marriage – brilliantly balance irony, savagery and laughter with Allen’s trademark wit.

English Touring Theatre return to The Nuffield following last season’s hugely popular The Hypochondriac, with Rum and Coca Cola (13 - 16 Oct), directed by Don Warrington - Rising Damp’s ‘Philip’. This gently humorous, bittersweet tale transports you to the beautiful island paradise of Trinidad, and the fiery heat of the Caribbean sun…

The Overcoat (19 - 23 Oct) promises ‘an extraordinary journey through an intoxicating world’ as the award-winning Gecko, fresh from an international tour, reinvent Gogol’s famous short story with a blend of bold physicality, beautiful images, evocative music and dramatic storytelling.

Max Stafford-Clark's acclaimed company Out of Joint return with a sharp, boisterous and witty thriller The Big Fellah (26 - 30 Oct). Set among Irish Americans in New York, this dark and funny new play comes from the award-winning writer Richard Bean, and follows his Oliver-nominated comedy England People Very Nice for The National Theatre.

Other highlights this autumn include: The Meeting (2 - 3 Nov) - a dramatic event that will take you right to the heart of the civil rights movement and to the centre of a debate that still rages today, Love is in the Air (9 Nov) - an innovative new production from the adventurous South Asian dance company Srishti, that combines film, aerial work and music with the traditional form of Bharatanatyam dance and The Missionary's Position (13 Nov) - an outrageous and flamboyant true story about one of England’s great eccentrics, from the award-winning Penny Dreadful.

Clod Ensemble present Under Glass (4 - 6 Nov), an enthralling performance in which a collection of human beings are contained in a series of glass jars and cabinets on The Nuffield’s Main Stage, and [Look Left, Look Right] - who charmed audiences with The Caravan last year - return with Counted? (13 - 15 Oct), a play about British democracy, performed in the stunning historic setting of the Bargate Monument, which was Southampton’s Guildhall until the 1770s.

Shows in the Studio include the return of Apples and Snakes bi-monthly performance poetry night 451 (23 Aug, 25 Oct & 13 Dec), and the fast-paced spoof horror Is That A Bolt In Your Neck (20 - 22 Sep) from critically acclaimed comedy trio Gonzo Moose. Other Studio highlights include Etiquette (18 - 22 &25 - 29 Oct), an ‘incredibly unique theatre experience for just two people at a time’, and Al Bowlly’s Croon Manifesto (22 - 24 Nov), a rip-roaring evening of 1930s music, theatre and dance!

For children, The Nuffield also presents Blitz (30 - 31 Oct) - a unique participation experience for 5 – 11 year olds from The Nuffield Theatre Company, which will see the Nuffield Studio transformed into the Blitz ravaged Britain of 1942.

There is also a busy season of comedy, with some of the hottest names on the circuit, including: Robin Ince (10 Oct), Julian Clary (17 Oct), Jeremy Hardy (31 Oct), John Shuttleworth (7 Nov) and Brendon Burns (14 Nov).

The season finale is Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (25 Nov - 8 Jan) which promises to be huge fun for children and grown-ups of all ages!
