Photos: Rupert Everett wins Sheridan Morley Prize for Theatre BiographyDate: 27 February 2013Following his recent win at the Whatsonstage.com Awards, actor Rupert Everett has another prize to add to the mantelpiece having won the sixth annual Sheridan Morley Prize for Theatre Biography. Everett, who won for his second autiobiography Vanished Years, came top of a shortlist that also included Simon Callow for Charles Dickens and The Great Theatre of The World, Arthur Laurents for The Rest Of The Story, Michael Pennington for Sweet William, Sue Prideaux for Strindberg, A Life, and Kate Bassett for In Two Minds: A Biography Of Jonathan Miller. The £2000 prize, which was established in 2008 in honour of prolific biographer and critic Sheridan Morley, was awarded during a ceremony held today at The Garrick Club.
Chaired by Ruth Leon, this year's jury comprised theatre critic Mark Shenton, director Braham Murray and actor and writer Isla Blair - who was on last year's shortlist for A Tiger's Wedding. The jury said of Everett's Vanished Years, "It has been an extraordinary year for theatre biographies, but even in a very strong field, Rupert Everett's Vanished Years was a clear winner. It's just plain fun to read, and is a firsthand account of the everyday life of a working and highly successful actor from the inside. Surprising, hilarious and wise." Everett is currently playing Oscar Wilde in a revival of David Hare's The Judas Kiss - for which he won the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Actor in a Play - at the Duke of York's Theatre, where it runs until 6 April.
