The Bodyguard joins star-studded line-up of Whatsonstage.com Awards Concert

Date: 6 February 2013

Blockbuster screen-to-stage musical The Bodyguard has joined the star-studded line-up of the 2013 Whatsonstage.com Awards Concert at the West End's Palace Theatre on 17 February.

The show, adapted from the hit 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, is nominated for six awards, including Best New Musical, Best Actress and Actor in a Musical for its stars Heather Headley and Lloyd Owen, and Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for Debbie Kurup, all of whom have confirmed to attend.

Directed by Thea Sharrock (who is also nominated), The Bodyguard features classic Whitney songs including "One Moment in Time", "Saving All My Love", "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and "I Will Always Love You".

The Whatsonstage.com Awards Concert has become one of the highlights of the theatregoing calendar. An unmissable night with lots of glitz, glamour and fun and a chance for you, the theatregoer voter, to take part in the culmination of the only major theatre accolades decided by the public.

As previously announced, other performers at this year's Concert include Jesus Christ Superstar's Tim Minchin and Melanie C, Wicked co-stars Louise Dearman and Gina Beck, Soho Cinders’ hilarious double act Beverly Rudd and Suzie Chard, 9 to 5 star Natalie Casey and the casts of nominated shows including Top Hat, Spamalot and Taboo, featuring stars including Sam Buttery, Paul Baker, Jon Robyns and Gavin Lee.

There will also be performances from Olivier Award winner David Bedella (Jerry Springer The Opera, Torch Song Trilogy), Alice Fearn (Shrek, Into the Woods and Les Miserables on screen) and Hannah Levane (Sister Act, High School Musical).

The Concert will be hosted by Rufus Hound – who makes his West End debut this month taking over as Francis Henshall in Richard Bean's Whatsonstage.com Award-winning hit comedy One Man, Two Guvnors (read our interview here) - and Great British Bake Off star Mel Giedroyc, who returns having co-hosted the 2010 Awards Concert.

The Awards Concert is directed and devised by Russell Labey, with sound by Ben Harrison, lighting by Mike Robertson, choreography by Lizzi Gee and musical supervision and orchestrations by Tom Deering. It's produced by Stuart Piper and Jason Haigh-Ellery on behalf of Whatsonstage.com, with general management by Peter Huntley and production management by Chris Fisher.

As with December's Launch Party, the Concert is held in aid of this year's adopted charity, Interact (part of Stagecoach Charitable Trust), which provides disabled and disadvantaged children and young people with real opportunities to develop valuable skills for life through drama, movement and music workshops.
