Digital Theatre launches new iPad app

Date: 10 January 2013

Whatsonstage.com Awards sponsor Digital Theatre has today (10 January 2013) launched its new app for the Apple iPad.

According to a statement from the company, "Following the successful launch of the Samsung Smart TV app in September 2012, the new iPad app allows audiences to watch productions wherever they are."

Working in partnership with theatre companies including the Young Vic, Royal Shakespeare Company, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Almeida Theatre and leading West End producers, Digital Theatre specialises in the capture of live performances in high definition from multiple camera angles.

The current Digital Theatre catalogue includes recent West End productions of All My Sons starring David Suchet and Zoë Wanamaker and Much Ado About Nothing with David Tennant and Catherine Tate.

All of Digital Theatre’s productions are now available to watch through the iPad app, including four productions from Shakespeare’s Globe’s 2010 season, which as previously announced forms part of Digital Theatre Collections launched in October 2012.

Digital Theatre co-founder and CEO Robert Delamere said: "We developed our iPad app as a direct response to feedback from our audience and we’re delighted to bring Digital Theatre productions to a device with the convenience and ubiquity of the iPad."

He added: "Our apps for iPad and Samsung Smart TV form the start of a multi-platform strategy that will allow audiences to enjoy Digital Theatre productions where and when they want."

Digital Theatre users can stream any pre-purchased production via the iPad app, including Online Rentals, Downloads and HD Downloads, as well as access trailers for all productions. Productions can also be played to an HDTV with AirPlay and Apple TV.

The Digital Theatre iPad app also gives access to The Journal, a daily arts blog with content sourced from artists and practitioners around the world. According to press material, "Each daily selection, curated by journalist Matthew Hussey, is designed to inspire, entertain and intrigue."

The Digital Theatre app is available now in the Apple App Store as a free download.
