Patrick Marber returns to Donmar to revamp Trelawny

Date: 24 December 2012

Writer Patrick Marber is returning to the Donmar Warehouse to work on Joe Wright's forthcoming revival of Pinero's Trelawny of the Wells.

Marber, who premiered his plays After Miss Julie and Don Juan in Soho at the venue, will make what he terms "most respectful additions and ornamentation" to Pinero's text for the production, which opens on 26 February 2013 (previews from 15 February).

First staged in 1898, Trelawny of the Wells centres on a Victorian actress who renounces her love of theatre in order to marry an aristocrat. His family are less convinced of her charms, however, and her challenge to their dreary, snobby existence shocks them to their core.

As previously announced, the cast for the Donmar revival includes Jamie Beamish, Ron Cook, Aimée-Ffion Edwards, Susannah Fielding, Daniel Kaluuya, Daniel Mays, Fergal McElherron, Amy Morgan, Joshua Silver, Maggie Steed and Peter Wight.

Patrick Marber's other stage plays include Dealer's Choice, Closer, Howard Katz and The Musicians. He has also written the screenplays for films including Old Street, Closer, Asylum, Notes on a Scandal and Love You More.

Joe Wright, whose film directing credits include Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Anna Karenina, is the son of Little Angel Theatre founders John and Lyndie Wright, though has never before directed for the stage.
