Opening: Old Vic’s Hedda Gabler, King Lear at the Almeida & Hampstead’s Judas Kiss

Among this week's major London theatre openings, in the West End and further afield, are the Old Vic’s production of Hedda Gabler starring Sheridan Smith, Michael Attenborough’s production of King Lear starring Jonathan Pryce at the Almeida Theatre, David Hare's The Judas Kiss at Hampstead Theatre starring Rupert Everett, and more:

Fresh from winning a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Fringe this year, Mark Thomas’ show about the difficult relationship between him and his dad runs at the Tricycle Theatre until 22 September before touring the UK.

Tarell Alvin McCraney’s new play set in an all boys, all black, American prep school scores a gospel refrain of the politics of minority and masculinity. Directed by Royal Court artistic director Dominic Cooke, it runs until 6 October.

King Lear
11 September 2012
(Previews from 31 August)

Running as part of the World Shakespeare Festival, Michael Attenborough’s production stars Jonathan Pryce as the eponymous King. The play runs at the Almeida Theatre until 3 November.

Hedda Gabler
12 September 2012

Ibsen’s classic, directed by Anna Mackmin stars Sheridan Smith in the title role, using a new version of the text by Brian Friel. The production runs at the Old Vic until 10 November.

A portrayal of the fall from grace of Oscar Wilde, David Hare's new play The Judas Kiss stars Rupert Everett and Freddie Fox and runs at Hampstead Theatre until 13 October.

The Magic Flute

One of Mozart’s best-loved operas, The Magic Flute runs at the London Coliseum until 18 October.
