Dominic West returns to Crucible to star in My Fair Lady
Date: 20 July 2012
Dominic West will play professor Henry Higgins in the forthcoming Sheffield Crucible production of My Fair Lady, according to the Daily Mail.
Lerner and Loewe's classic musical, adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion, features the songs "On The Street where you Live", "With a Little Bit of Luck" and "I Could have Danced all Night".
As previously announced, it opens in the Crucible on 18 December 2012 (previews from 12 December). The role of Covent Garden flower seller turned linguistic guinea pig Eliza Dolittle will be played by Carley Bawden.
Sheffield Theatres artistic director Daniel Evans will direct the revival, with designs by Paul Wills and choreography by Alistair David.
Dominic West is well known to fans of HBO's The Wire having played Detective Jimmy McNulty for five seasons from 2002 to 2008. His other screen credits include The Devil’s Whore, Centurion and 300. On stage, his credits include Peter Hall's production of The Seagull at the Old Vic, As You Like It at Wyndham's Theatre, The Voysey Inheritance for the National Theatre, Tom Stoppard's Rock ‘n’ Roll and Butley in the West End.
A Sheffield local, he appeared in a major production of Othello opposite Wire co-star Clarke Peters in the Crucible Theatre last year. My Fair Lady will mark his musical theatre debut.
Carley Bawden is currently playing Susan in Rupert Goold's production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe in Kensington Gardens. Her other credits include Catherine in Pippin at the Menier Chocolate Factory and Genevieve in Kneehigh's Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
My Fair Lady features musical direction by Nigel Lilley, lighting by Tim Mitchell and sound by Simon Baker. It runs in the Crucible until 26 January 2013.
