Hair returns to the West End for Help For Heroes gala

Date: 1 June 2012

Hair, the Tony Award-winning, self-styled “American Tribal Love Rock Musical”, is returning to the West for one night only on 1 July. The performance at the Piccadilly Theatre is a gala fundraiser for the charity Help For Heroes, which supports British servicemen and women wounded in action.

The musical returns to London following a European tour last year. It was last seen in the capital in 2010 when the show ran for five months at the Gielgud with the full cast of the Broadway revival, a first for the the West End. After strong reviews the show posted early closing notices and had its final performance on 4 September 2010.

This summer's gala performance stars Zoe Birkett as Dionne, George Maguire as Berger and Amy Diamond is Sheila. Maguire recently appeared in Thrill Me and 20th Century Boy, in which he starred as Marc Bolan. Birkett and Diamond were finalists in TV talent shows Pop Idol and Over the Rainbow respectively, and Birkett has appeared in Priscilla Queen of the Desert in the West End. Diamond will be touring the UK in Dreamboats and Petticoats.

Hair opened on Broadway in 1968, where it ran for 1,873 performances. The musical then opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End that same year, causing a sensation as the first musical to open after the abolition of British stage censorship by the Lord Chamberlain.

The show was scheduled to begin a UK tour in April this year, starring Birkett and Diamond, with Gareth Gates in the role of Claude, but it was cancelled in February following an announcement that the show's producer, EJB Entertainment, had filed for bankruptcy.
