Tina Turner musical Soul Sister transfers to West End, 20 Aug

Date: 29 May 2012

Following its premiere at the Hackney Empire last month, Tina Turner musical Soul Sister will transfer to the West End's Savoy Theatre from 23 August 2012 (previews from 20 August).

According to press material, Soul Sister "tells the extraordinary story of musical legends Ike and Tina Turner, live on stage for the first time. Charting their electric first meeting and meteoric rise to fame through 1960s and 70s America, their turbulent marriage and Tina Turner's thrilling re-emergence as an international rock star and icon."

The score includes "What's Love Got To Do With It", "We Don't Need Another Hero", "Simply The Best", "Proud Mary", "Private Dancer", "River Deep Mountain High", "Respect", "A Fool in Love", "Honky Tonk Woman" and "Steamy Windows".

The production stars Emi Wokoma (Hairspray) as Tina and Chris Tummings (The Harder they Come) as Ike.

Directed by Pete Brooks and Bob Eaton, Soul Sister features choreography and musical staging by Jason Pennycooke. The book was devised by John Miller and Pete Brooks.

Soul Sister, which is produced by Bill Kenwright and John Miller, follows the current revival of Neil Simon's The Sunshine Boys starring Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths at the Savoy. It's initially booking until 29 September.

Saw this show last night at the Savoy Theatre. Although Emi Wokoma has a strong voice, she wasn't a patch on the real Tina Turner in her deliverance of the songs and the way she moved on stage. The only exception was when she sang "Proud Mary". The show was no more than a glorified tribute band act. - Leona

The audience reaction on the night I saw the show at Hackney Empire, could not have been more appreicative or louder if the real Tina Turner was there on that stage. I wish it well as a fantastically entertaining show with a knockout, astonishing performance from Emi Wokoma which you just knew would not be confined to Hackney. - Owen
