Billie Piper Stars in LaBute’s Reasons to Be Pretty at Almeida
Date: 2 September 2011

Billie Piper will return to the stage to star in the UK premiere of Neil LaBute's Reasons to Be Pretty, which runs at the Almeida Theatre from 17 November 2011 (previews from 10 November) to 14 January 2012. According to the Daily Mail, she’ll be joined by Kieran Bew, Sian Brooke and Tom Burke.

Reasons to Be Pretty, which will also be directed by LaBute, examines our perception of beauty and asks whether it is as much of a curse to be conventionally attractive as it is to be considered ugly.

The play had its world premiere at New York’s Lucille Lortel Theater in 2008 and has previously been tipped for the West End and connected with names including Lily Allen, Julia Stiles and Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera.

Billie Piper made her stage debut in 2007 in the West End revival of Christopher Hampton’s Treats. The former pop star’s many television credits include Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Doctor Who, A Passionate Woman, Mansfield Park, The Ruby in the Smoke, ShakespeaReTold and Things to Do Before You’re 30.

Reasons to Be Pretty will mark the second LaBute premiere in London this year, following the world premiere of In a Forest Dark and Deep, which he also directed, starring Matthew Fox and Olivia Williams in the West End.

The American dramatist’s relationship with the Almeida goes back to 2000 with the theatre having staged productions of The Shape of Things, The Distance from Here, The Mercy Seat and In a Dark Dark House. His other plays seen in London include Fat Pig, Some Girls and This Is How It Goes, while his screen credits include Your Friends and Neighbors, Nurse Betty, Possession, The Shape of Things and the award-winning In the Company of Men.
