WOS Radio: Theatregoers Get UpClose with Don Giovanni

Date: 16 August 2011

Last night (15 August 2011), over 100 Whatsonstage.com theatregoers packed into the Soho Theatre to catch the latest production from award-winning company OperaUpClose, a very modern take on Mozart's Don Giovanni. OperaUpClose were last at the Soho with their production of La Boheme which transferred from the Cock Tavern in July 2010 and won both an Olivier and Whatsonstage.com Award.

Don Giovanni mixes "sex, drugs and Mozart" and is set in the excess of the 1990s. Don is played as a city trader who - with his hapless intern Alexander - are working hard and playing harder, leaving a trail of broken hearts, junked-up prostitutes and banker’s blood in their wake.

Following the performance, we were joined by Robin Norton-Hale (adaptor/director), Harry  Blake (electronic score), Cherry Truluck (designer), Emily Leather (music director), Ben Cooper (producer), and cast members Rosalind Coad (Elvira) and Fleur Bray (Anna).

The Q&A was hosted by Whatsonstage.com's Theo Bosanquet, and topics discussed included the opera's moral dubiousness, whether mixing Mozart with drum and bass is sacrilege, how it felt to sing the roles in a small space, and an exclusive revelation regarding the company's next project.
