Cast: Sell a Door's Spring Awakening Tour Date: 21 April 2011 Fringe Theatre Company Sell a Door's forthcoming touring production of the highly acclaimed musical Spring Awakening has been cast. The show which arrives at the Lowry in June is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. Set in late-nineteenth century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality.
The musical premiered at New York’s Atlantic Theater Company in May 2006 and transferred that December to Broadway’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre, going on to win eight trophies, including Best Musical, at the 2007 Tony Awards. It received its UK premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith in February 2009, transferring later that year to the West End’s Novello Theatre where it ran for just six weeks but went on to win a slew of Olivier, Whatsonstage.com, Critics’ Circle and Evening Standard Awards. There have long been rumours that a big-screen adaptation is in the offing. The cast features Jonathan Elo as Melchior and Victoria Serra as Wendla. The show also features Jill Armour, James Benn, Dan Buckley, Billy Cullum, Natalie Green, Jess Mack, Anna McGarahan, Zachary Morris, Dale Page and Jane Stanton. Spring Awakening is directed by Pete Gallagher and the production designer is Adrian Gee. It runs at the Lowry on 14 and 15 June. - by Glenn Meads Related Content
