Connie Fisher Reprises Sound of Music Role

The hills of the North East will soon be alive with The Sound of Music, as the world’s favourite musical, fronted by the British public’s favourite ‘Maria’, skips into the Theatre Royal for a spectacular three week run from 20 September to 8 October 2011.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music is probably the most well-known and well-loved musical of all time. It first premiered on Broadway in 1959, winning six Tony Awards including ‘Best Musical’, and went on to have a historic series of record-breaking runs in the West End . The 1965 Hollywood film, which starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, won five Oscars, including ‘Best Picture’.

The latest lavish production, from Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Ian and The Really Useful Group, is set to arrive in Newcastle in September with one of the biggest theatre stars of the current age in the iconic role of ‘Maria’.

Connie Fisher won BBC 1’s How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? and played the role at the London Palladium for 15 months, to critical acclaim. Before reprising the role for the UK tour she starred in the Menier Chocolate Factory’s production of They’re Playing Our Song and the ITV drama Caught in a Trap.

Direct from a sell-out run at the London Palladium, this production tells the story of the musical Von Trapp family and their flight across the Austrian mountains at the beginning of World War II. It is a heroic tale of patriotism, love and loyalty, and positivity in dark times. It bears a rare magic which continues to ensure its timelessness and mass appeal.

The unforgettable score includes some of the most memorable songs ever performed on the musical stage including "My Favorite Things", "Do-Re-Mi", "The Lonely Goatherd", and of course the glorious title song "The Sound of Music".

The Sound of Music appears at Newcastle Theatre Royal from Tuesday 20 September to Saturday 8 October 2011.
