Cake, Cotton & Marquez Join Hollander for Flea

Jonathan Cake, Oliver Cotton, Fiona Glascott, John Marquez and Tim McMullan are amongst the stellar ensemble who will join previously-reported stars Tom Hollander and Lisa Dillon in Richard Eyre’s new production of French farce A Flea in Her Ear, which runs at the Old Vic from 14 December 2010 to 5 March 2011 (previews from 4 December).

In the comedy of errors, Raymonde (Dillon) suspects her husband Victor (Hollander) of infidelity and enlists the help of her friend Lucienne (Glascott) to set a trap for him. Their plan misfires when the anonymous letter they send him suggesting a rendezvous leads to a sequence of mistaken identities and bruised egos.

Jonathan Cake’s last London stage appearance was in the title role of Coriolanus at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2006. His other stage credits include Baby Doll, Mill on the Floss and Medea with Fiona Shaw in the West End and on Broadway, where he’s also starred in The Philanthropist, Parlour Song and Almost an Evening. On screen, he’s appeared in Brideshead Revisited, The One and Only and First Knight.

Also in the cast are Di Botcher, Freddie Fox, Lloyd Hutchinson, William Maxwell, Rebecca Night, Maggie Service and Walter Van Dyk. The production is designed by Rob Howell, with costumes by Sue Blane, lighting by Mark Henderson and sound by Gregory Clarke.

John Mortimer’s version of Georges Feydeau’s 1907 classic has previously been performed on the Old Vic stage in 1989 (starring Jim Broadbent) and in 1966 (starring Albert Finney, under the auspices of the then-resident National Theatre). The new production, co-produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, lures Richard Eyre back to the Old Vic for the first time since he helmed Trevor Griffiths’ Comedians there in 1974.
