Vote in WOS Poll: Next Musical for TV Casting?

Date: 17 June 2010

Our Big Debate polls are back! And, following the conclusion of Andrew Lloyd Webber and the BBC’s latest programme Over the Rainbow, the first in our new series poses a question that’s been attracting lots of chatter on Whatsonstage.com Discussion Forum: what should be the next musical to receive the reality TV casting treatment? If any?

Plus, we want to know, who has been the biggest musical star to emerge so far from reality TV? Is it Connie Fisher, Lee Mead, Jodie Prenger or perhaps one of their competitors? And how much more mileage is there left in the entire format?

THIS POLL IS NOW CLOSED. FOR FURTHER RESULTS & ANALYSIS, CLICK HERE.

I Have a new musical for TV Casting is Mad Monster Party. I Wonder if Andrew should cast an actress to play the role of Francesca in the London production of the stage musical. - Billy

Lara Scotland You are so right. To hell with the show. They just want to see Lee Mead. No-one is allowed to comment on his performance and criticise. Otherwise the witches in his stupid fan club swoop down and beat you with their broomsticks. Because of this Lee Mead is a liability in a show. - punchy

I Wonder if Grahan Norton hosts the new BBC 1 reality casting competition called ''Wicked: The Search for Elphaba, Glinda, Nessarose & Fiyero''. - Billy

11 Jul 10

I don't see that the most successful is obviously Lee Mead!!! He's obviously the most shrewd. He got himself a married to a minor celeb who plays the media for all it's worth and he stays in the limelight that way. The other contestants have worked to get where they are on their own and have not used anyone else. Lee Mead has only done a low cost touring play and now has a support part in Wicked not a lead. He's not had a leading west End part since Joseph. So he's not that good. - Tall Person

I think some of you are missing the plot. The poll was not for who you as an individual think is the best performer. Saying Rachel is wonderful in Wicked or loving Daniel Boys is wonderful but the poll was for most successful and that is obviously Lee Mead. And I believe his arrogantness that someone mentioned is in truth shyness. - Amanda

02 Jul 10

In reply to Mo once again. The poll is asking you to vote on who you think is the most successful to come out of a tv reality show, nothing more nothing less. Just a simple vote. - gladys

30 Jun 10

What did the hundreds of West End Shows do before reality TV I wonder.... - MO

30 Jun 10

In reply to Mo. Get in the real world, every show needs a name to bring in audiences, and all the actors who are well known have worked hard to achieve this. I agree with the previous poster, WOS please bring this poll to its conclusion now. - Gladys

29 Jun 10

Most certainly NOT Lee Mead. I voted Rach Tucker having seen her in Wicked but I think 'most successful' is a dodgy name to put on this!! Define success? Is it being good? Fan base? Actual talent? All these things would have different results!! All I know is that Wicked rocks with and without reality TV actresses and actors and doesn't need the names! - MO

29 Jun 10

I do think this poll is getting out of hand. It's becoming a tool for people to place nasty personal comments. Most of the final contestants in the TV shows are doing well so lets be happy about that. The poll asked who do we think has been the most successful and not about who you feel like slagging off. So perhaps this poll should now be brought to a conclusion. As I have already, said some of the people making comments are being nasty just for the sake of it. - steve

Rachel, Rachel, Rachel Tucker! The best voice of the lot! I wasn't that impressed with Ben James Ellis when I saw Hairspray, haven't been to see Daniel, prefer how Jodie is off stage and Lee Mead is good at times and really off on others. He can be very sharp and flat compared to some of the other West End stars who tend to be near note perfect. He also seems to have only one accent for the stage. The reason I like Rachel is because of the power of her voice and her pitch is brilliant. So my vote goes to her tenfold! - Ashleigh

29 Jun 10

Ah thank you for enlightening me but I wasn't referring to Lee mead fans but fans in general. And, I still maintain a fan (shortened from the word fanatic!) has a skewed view of their idol in that they cannot see any faults. I go to the theatre because I want to see a particular show and an added bonus is when an actor is excellent. Reading these comments you guys go because you want to see the actor not the show - Lara Scotland

29 Jun 10

I'm sorry but I don't think you can separate success and popularity. Popularity is a part of what makes success. You can be the most talented actor/singer in the world but if no-one wants to watch you/buy your albums then you will never be successful. It is the kind of ridiculous bigotted comments put forward by people like Bertie that have no relevance to success or to this poll. Oh, and incidentally, Lee Mead fans are LOPPIES not loopies. - Margaret

29 Jun 10

Reading these comments, It is pretty obvious to me who is the most POPULAR and that is Lee Mead. But, does that translate to the most success? I am not sure about that. Loopy fans can have a pretty skewed view of success. Anyway ALW's shows do raise the profile of all the contestants and if you compare it to shows like the X factor they have all done better. I think it is too early to say re success as to me success is about longetivity and not just a flash in the pan. Will any of these be the next Barrowman. Ball or Ellis? Some of them I am sure of it but not all and them and the most sucessful will not be the winners of the shows. - Lara Scotland

28 Jun 10

It's undeniable that Daniel Boys and Lee Mead are very successful. But both of them had been in the business for years and never did manage to get seriously noticed before they appeared on a nation wide television show. My vote for most successful goes to Ben James-Ellis, who came straight from theatre school and landed the role of Link Larkin in Hairspray straight after Any Dream Will Do while he was only 18 back then. Since, he has toured with Michael Ball and John Barrowman, played the lead in the Hostage, did some TV work for Sky and managed to do a Panto in between. Currently he is in rehearsals for the role of Norman in Dreamboats and Petticoats, has a Christmas play lined up and I believe also a TV shows where he does presenting work. For someone so young I call this pretty successful. The only thing he doesn't have is a truckload of "loopie" fans who have taken over the comments on this article. - New Jersey Boy

26 Jun 10

its a ridiculous question and most people commenting here are basing it on who they like the best so do you all really think success = popularity? How do you define success? getting great parts in musicals (Aoife,Rachel, Ben, Dan?),or also doing TV (Jodie, Ben?) and straight plays (Lee, Ben?), popularity (Lee?), artistic merit (all of them at times), commercial success (the winners?), being nice at the stage door (maybe not Lee?) In every series there have been maybe 3 or 4 performers who have done particularly well including the winners who have the benefit of a higher profile. And that's the strength of these shows and I wish all the most talented the best. You're also comparing actors who had just started in their careers, such as Sam, Ben, Jess, Connie, Aoife with those more established and experienced e.g. Lee, Dan, Rachel. Wait 5 years then lets see who is still working and then maybe you can compare! - emma

26 Jun 10

Rachael Tucker all the way! AMMMMMAAAAAZZZZING voice. Lee Mead comes over arrogant and cold and like he doesn't want to be there when he's spoken to. I haven't liked him since he took up with one of the judges¬! - Bertie

26 Jun 10

Major- you must have been dreadfully unlucky. Lee has always been nothing but incredibly generous with his time in my experience-happy to chat, sign and have a photo. He even approached a group of us waiting near stage door to thank us for our support, rather than us approach him. He appeared outside the Adelphi for most nights of his Joseph run to give out autographs to crowds often apporaching several hundred, in what affectionately became known as 'The Scrum', something few people would commit to night after night. Admittedly he is now often keen to get home to his new born baby ( and who could criticise him for that?)but according to reports, he has been more than friendly enough before and after his recent concerts. I do hope you get the chance to let Lee put this right someday. - Tizzler

26 Jun 10

Lee Mead gets my vote, he is the most successful, he is very down to earth and so nice to his fans. The 18 months he was in Joseph he would come out after every performance to meet his fans and sign autographs. He also did this when he was touring with Lord Arthur Savile's Crime. A very talented and lovely guy. - Vi

26 Jun 10

Lee Mead would have been my favourite until he rolled his eyes at me when I approached him at the stage door of the Adelphi for an autograph. Maybe it was just a bad day for him but it really hurt as I'd travelled a distance to support him. He seemed so nice on tv but came across a bit cold and aloof in real life which was a shame. I'll vote for Rachel Tucker instead. Absolutely amazing vocalist and such a genuine person. - Major

26 Jun 10

No question! Its the very successful Lee Mead !!! - Su

25 Jun 10

Lee is the most successful and versatile performer overall. Sorry but I don't get 'Picky's' comment that 'he seems alimited actor'???? He has just finished a successful and critically aclaimed tour in an Oscar Wilde play alongside some very well known actors who all had nothing but praise for him. He has performed in numerous concerts including the current tour of his own concerts. This is on top of his sell out run run as Joseph and his current role in Wicked. Much as I like Daniel and Jodie neither of them have done anywhere near the varity of roles which Lee has. Limited !!!!!! I think not!!!!! - Galadriel49

25 Jun 10

Lee Mead is by far the most successful. He was the best Joseph ever, as stated by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber on Lee's last night as Joseph and was presented with his very own technicolour coat by Lord Webber, the first Joseph to ever receive this honour. Lee has performed in numerous concerts, he performed 2 songs on a film track, was the successful lead in an Oscar Wilde play, is currently the male lead in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria, Lee is also doing his own brilliant concert tour with his band. - Daisy

25 Jun 10

Ben James Ellis gets my vote-20 months in "Hairspray" singing dancing and acting as Link Larking he is very versatile- also played a serious but witty part as a cockney soldier in the "Hostage". - slys

25 Jun 10

Lee Mead gets my vote 100% also. What a versatile performer...and a gentleman. A real star not reality star - SueF

24 Jun 10

Definitely Lee Mead. He had 18 sold out months in Joseph. He has 2 successful albumns and now is currently the male lead in Wicked. He also has a series of solo concerts coming up. The first two have been extremely successful. He was wonderful at Basingstoke. - Margaret

24 Jun 10

Lee Mead is definitely the most successful and talented. He has such charisma on stage in whatever he plays, when you are in the audience he just draws you in and you never tire of watching him, whether it be musical theatre, a straight play or his concerts, he is an amazing talent. - Gladys

23 Jun 10

Having seen lee in concert recently. where he gave outstanding performances of several Musical theatre numbers including jesus christ superstar, anthem and close every door, I believe he is most definitely our most up and coming talents whom i shall be watching with great interest. - Toni

23 Jun 10

Lee Mead gets my vote, he is a very versatile actor. He has proved this by successfully playing the lead in an Oscar Wilde play as Lord Arthur in Lord Arthur Savile's Crime, proving he is a brilliant straight actor as well as a musical theatre actor. - Nicky

23 Jun 10

Lee was a not the best singer but a good winner of Any Dream Will do. I am not sure about now though. He seems a limited actor. Daniel B is better. Jodie is great too. - picky

23 Jun 10

LEE MEAD what a performer!!! I Saw wicked on 14th June. Rachel Tucker was brill and whole cast were fabulous but Lee Mead just blew me away! I have seen Wicked ahem.... just a few times over the past three years and this was undoubtedly the best performance to date. I have already booked to go again. Many thanks to previous posters for info. I didn't realise he had recorded and now thinking about going to one of his concerts - just got to find them!! - Jenni

22 Jun 10

Absolutely lee mead deserves this accolade - Chris o donnell

22 Jun 10

Lee Mead certainly deserves this accolade. He has worked extremely hard to achieve his status, which is an absolute Star, but he has also remained very modest and a true gentleman. He certainly gets my vote 100%. - steve

22 Jun 10

Lee Mead has in my opinion been the most successful. He not only starred as Joseph and was the best one I had seen.He also starred in a tour of an Oscar Wilde play , released two albums ,is playing Fiyero in Wicked and has just started a series of concerts. Lee has also taken part in numerous chatiry events and supports several charities including two in his home town. - Pat

22 Jun 10

Rachel Tucker - Playing Meat in we will rock you and then going onto land the Role of Elphaba(one of the best female roles in musical theatre) - Lauren

22 Jun 10

Lee Mead has definitely been the most successful. Not only did he have a fantastically successful 18 months as Joseph at the Adelphi with 600 sold out performances. He has realeased 2 fantastic albums, been in numerous concerts, worked on albums for Children in Need and charity concerts is now starring as Fiyero in Wicked and also has his own concert tour with his very own band. I could go on and on about his achievements but there would not be enough room on the page. - sarah cox

22 Jun 10

Lee Mead has my vote 100%. He is so versatile, such a Star. He has achieved so much since winning Any Dream Will Do. Amazing. - mavis margrain

22 Jun 10

Lee Mead easily gets my vote- after an extended sell out show in Joseph,he displayed his versatility with a straight acting lead role in Lord Arthur Savile's crime( having taken time out to study acting in New York for 3 months)He is now the male lead in Wicked, has two albums to his credit and is currently fronting a series of his own concerts. He has also performed at a wide variety of charity concerts including Children in Need, Muscular Dystrophy at Lincoln Cathedral, Australia Flood and Fire benefit and Helping the heart of music concert at The Albert Hall, amongst others. He has appeared as a guest alongside Rhydian and Hayley Westenra, as well as performing at a Tribute to Ian Fleming, Andrew Lloyd Webber's 60th birthday,An audience with Tim Rice, Lyrics by Don Black, An Andrew Lloyd Webber Gala,The Princes Trust Awards and the concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium. On top of all that he is a genuinely lovely guy! - Tizzler

22 Jun 10

Daniel Boys is surely the most successful. He has tirelessly promoted Avenue Q, as well as being invited to join JB on tour along with producing his own debut album to great acclaim. He deserves all the success that is coming his way - Mandy Romeo-Dieste

21 Jun 10

Daniel Boys defenatly he so amazing and come real far - emma

21 Jun 10

Daniel Boys is definately the best thing to come out of any of these shows, he's amazing at everything he touches, it seems to me!! - Danielle Larcombe

21 Jun 10

Daniel Boys is definately the biggest talent to come out of these shows. His continued success since ADWD speaks for itself and his debut album is AMAZING. - Jacqui

21 Jun 10

Jodie has done so much with radio, tv and recording and andrew said she is the most sussessful - Kelly anderson

To be honest OTR was missing John Barrowman. Seriously missing him; the judges were uninspiring& contestants not up to scratch & I gave up - Carole
