Key North-East Openings this June
Date: 1 June 2010

Amongst the major openings in the North-East (Yorkshire region) this month are:

>OPENING 4 June 2010, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is at Stephen Joseph Theatre with a cast including Florence Andrews and Jared Ashe. Shakespeare’s magical comedy follows confused and tricked lovers Helen and Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius, as they unwittingly get caught up in fairy queen Titania’s battle with husband Oberon in the forest. Factor in a few bumbling Mechanicals, and some mischievous fairies, and mayhem is bound to ensue. Chris Monks directs. The season continues until 31 July.

>OPENING 10 June 2010, Kiss of the Spider Woman is at Hull Truck Studio with a cast including Tony Timberlake and Daniel Crossley. The Best Picture Oscar-nominated 1985 film hits the stage, as a political play framing an unexpected love story. Revolving around the relationship between young Valentin and Molina, who are both locked up in a South American prison cell, will their friendship end in betrayal? Hannah Chissick directs. The season continues until 26 June.

>OPENING 11 June 2010, Hay Fever is at West Yorkshire Playhouse with a cast including Maggie Steed and Martin Turner. In Noel Coward’s country house comedy, the eccentric Bliss family live their lives as if they are on stage: retired actress Judith Bliss has invited an avid fan to stay for the weekend but her family have all brought guests home too. Watch as the drama – both real and imagined – unfolds. Ian Brown directs. The season continues until 10 July.

>OPENING June 2010, Alice is at Sheffield Theatre Crucible with a cast including Ruby Bentall and Pippa Haywood. Follow Alice down the rabbit hole in this new adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic, by Sheffield native Laura Wade. Expect all the familiar faces of the Red Queen, the White Rabbit and the Mad Hatter as Alice attempts to navigate the strange and unexpected on her path home. Lyndsey Turner directs. The season continues until 24 July.

>OPENING 24 June 2010, Cooking with Elvis is revived at Hull Truck Theatre with a cast including Chris Connell and Jackie Lye. Jill and Mam look after Dad, a former Elvis impersonator now confined to a wheelchair, but when Mam gets a new dopey lover, Stuart, sexual tensions spiral out of control in Lee Hall’s outrageous script. Gareth Tudor Price directs. The season continues until 10 July.
