Old Red Lion Announces New Directors & Venue
Date: 21 May 2010
The Old Red Lion pub theatre in Islington has announced a new team of artistic directors to take over from Helen Devine, who leaves at end of this month – Henry Filloux-Bennett, Stephen Makin and Kellie Spooner.
Additionally, the venue is launching a brand new space – the New Red Lion – to open later this year, under the same artistic directors. Currently Offside Bar and Gallery on City Road, it will become an 80-seat performance venue after a full refurbishment and will be programmed in tandem with the Old Red Lion to present a "thrilling and complimentary seasonal programme".
Filloux-Bennett, Makin and Spooner currently work jointly together as producers for Le Nez Productions. Past projects individually or in collaboration include: Well, which transferred from Trafalgar Studios 2 to the West End in 2008; Madagascar by JT Rogers, currently at Theatre503 starring Sorcha Cusack; and the 25th anniversary tour of Stepping Out.
Their recent productions at the Old Red Lion include ‘Til I Die, Tom Stoppard’s Artist Descending A Staircase and Christmas Reloaded.
Outgoing artistic director Helen Devine said of the appointment: “I've worked closely with Henry, Stephen and Kellie in the past and have seen enough of their passion, dedication and experience first-hand to know that I'm leaving the venue in great hands. I'm delighted they've joined the Old Red Lion team and wish them and the theatre every success in the future.”
