Soho Appoints Steve Marmion as Artistic Director
Date: 10 May 2010

Steve Marmion has been appointed as new artistic director of Soho Theatre, taking over from Lisa Goldman. He will join the company in July, working towards a first season in 2011.

Marmion has been a literary associate at the Soho for the last two years and directing credits at the venue include Anthony Nielson’s Edward Gant’s Amazing Feats of Loneliness in 2009.

More recently he directed the Lyric Hammersmith’s Jack and the Beanstalk (with writing team Richard Bean, Che Walker, Morgan Lloyd Malcom and Joel Horwood) and is currently working on Macbeth for the Open Air Theatre in July. He was an associate director at the RSC and has worked with the National Theatre, Royal Court, the Theatre Royal Plymouth, Theatre Royal Bath, and Sherman Cardiff amongst others.

He said in a press statement: “Throughout my career I have worked across theatrical styles, from new writing to Shakespeare to sketch troupes all the way to pantomime. For me the combination of cutting edge new writing, the best in comedy, the reputation for brave collaboration and a young dynamic audience, makes Soho one of the most exciting venues in British theatre. I can’t wait to be part of the company’s next thrilling chapter.”

Soho’s chairman, Nicholas Allott, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Steve to Soho Theatre. He stood out from an incredibly strong field. He is a real talent with a distinctive vision and I predict exciting times ahead for Soho Theatre.”

The selection panel also included Royal Court artistic director Dominic Cooke, playwright Oladipo Agboluaje and an unnamed representative from Arts Council London.
