Callow Tracks Shakespeare in New One-Man Show
Date: 21 April 2010

Simon Callow will endeavour to 'track down the real William Shakespeare' when he stars in a new one-man comedy by Bard scholar Jonathan Bate due to embark on a national tour in June, culminating with a run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Shakespeare - The Man from Stratford is billed as “a magical tour-de-force”, which “brings to life both the man and the unforgettable characters, who have since conquered the world’s stages”.

Callow has enjoyed previous Edinburgh and touring success with his one-man shows The Mystery of Charles Dickens and last year's Dr Marigold & Mr Chops. His other recent stage credits include Waiting for Godot opposite Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, while his many films include hit comedies Four Weddings and a Funeral and Shakespeare in Love.

Writer Jonathan Bate is a Shakespeare biographer and editor of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Shakespeare: The Complete Works. He is also currently Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature at the University of Warwick and a Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company. His books include The Genius of Shakespeare and Soul of the Age: The Life, Mind and World of William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare - The Man from Stratford will be directed by Tom Cairns, whose theatre work includes Phaedra (Donmar), All About My Mother (Old Vic), and The Odyssey and Aristocrats (National). It's produced by Howard Panter for Ambassador Theatre Group and Assembly Theatre, with Marshall Cordell.

The tour kicks off at the Theatre Royal Plymouth from 10 to 12 June, before visiting: Liverpool Playhouse (16-19 June), Oxford Playhouse (21-22 June), Cambridge Arts (23-26 June), Theatre Royal Bath (28-30 June), Sheffield Lyceum (1-3 July), Theatre Royal Windsor (6-10 July), Theatre Royal Brighton (13-17 July), Malvern Festival Theatre (20-22 July), Taunton Brewhouse Theatre (23-24 July), Richmond Theatre (27-31 July), and, as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Assembly Hall (5-30 August).
