Date: 16 February 2009

The ninth annual Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards achieved a resounding climax last night (15 February 2009) at our Results Concert at the Prince of Wales Theatre, co-hosted for a second year in a row by James Corden and Sheridan Smith (See Also Today’s WOS TV coverage). The Theatregoers’ Choice Awards are the only major theatre prize-giving decided by the public. From 5 December, when shortlists were announced at our industry-attended Launch Party, to 31 January when voting closed, over 35,000 people voted online on our awards microsite – that’s 10,000 more than last year and a new record.

Eddie Izzard, Michael Grandage, Ray Davies, Sophie Thompson, Katy Stephens, Tracie Bennett, Tom Hiddleston and, as part of the Jersey Boys haul, Ryan Molloy, Stephen Ashfield and original Four Season and composer Bob Gaudio were just some of the big names who collected 24 trophies at last night’s event (For full winners’ lists, See News, 15 Feb 2009).

David Tennant, whose return to the stage in Hamlet was named Theatre Event of the Year, was unable to attend last night’s event due to Doctor Who filming in Dubai. However, his hard-working understudy Edward Bennett - who valiantly took over for Tennant just before the show’s London press night, when the star suffered a back injury – was on hand to collect along with director and RSC chief associate Gregory Doran.

Other stars in attendance, along with the sell-out public audience, included: Jayde Westaby, Jason Pennycooke, Kerry Michael, Kevin R McNally, Lesley Sharp, Lesli Margherita, Linda Thorson, Lisa O’Hare, Lorraine Bruce, Lucy Briers, Lynne Page, Malcolm Rippeth, Malcolm Sinclair, Caroline Sheen, Michael Jibson, Phil Willmott, Nicole Faraday, Shona White, Matt Rawle, Matthew Bourne, Michelle Terry, Nick Reed, Nick Cavaliere, Patina Miller, Pip Carter, Rachel Tucker, Rafael Armago, Roger Davies, Rolan Bell, Shaun Niles, Sheila Hancock, Sofia Escobar, Simon Merrells, Suzanne Shaw, Terry Johnson, Tom Piper, Klara Zieglerova and David Eldridge.
