Fringe First Winner Deep Cut Transfers to Tricycle
Date: 12 February 2009

Following its award-winning debut at the Traverse as part of last year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Philip Ralph's verbatim drama Deep Cut is transferring to the Tricycle Theatre for a four week run from 11 March (preview 10 March) to 4 April 2009.

Deep Cut uses original source material and powerful first hand testimonies of those closest to Private Cheryl James, one of four young soldiers who died from gunshot wounds in unexplained circumstances at the notorious barracks between 1995 and 2002.

At Edinburgh last year it won a Fringe First, Herald Angel, the Amnesty Freedom of Expression Award and a Best Actress (Rhian Blythe - pictured) and Best Actor (Ciaran McIntyre) at the Stage Awards (See News, 26 Aug 2008).

Deep Cut follows in the footsteps of another Traverse Fringe First 2008 winner, Enda Walsh's The New Electric Ballroom, which also makes a London transfer next month, running at the Riverside Studios from 3 to 29 March (See News, 22 Jan 2009).

The Tricycle has a long association with verbatim 'enquiry' dramas, with previously acclaimed productions including The Colour of Justice, which looked at the Stephen Lawrence enquiry,  Guantánamo: ‘Honor Bound to Defend Freedom’ (which transferred to the West End and Broadway) and 2007's Called to Account about the war in Iraq (See News, 10 January 2008).

Deep Cut is designed by Igor Vasilijev directed by Mick Gordon for Cardiff-based Sherman Cymru theatre company. The cast features Rhian Blythe, Ciaran McIntyre, Rhian Morgan, Robert Blythe, Simon Molloy and Robert Bowman.
